Water reel takes a back seat

The football field is in need of water, said Delphi Community School Corporation interim superintendent Fred Minnick at Monday night's meeting. He recommended to the board of trustees that one of the two water reels the corporation owns should be repaired and used for a spare and that a new one should be purchased for $5,890.

Minnick found a demo which was originally over $8,000. Jim Garrison motioned that the purchase be tabled until the board could determine the cost of repairing one of the two reels. Mike Shoemaker concurred and said one of the reels had been purchased in 2005, and he wanted to find out about the warranty before purchasing a new one. The issue was tabled.

Minnick said bids to build a track will be accepted with and without the cost of fencing and lighting. He told the board that those two items could be accomplished more economically if they are tackled separately from the track.

He told the board that he has received 20 applications for high school principal and is beginning the evaluation process.

The board approved administrators' contracts for an additional year, giving a "new" two-year contract to: Al Brannon, Jan Israel, Bob Blaydes, Debbie Williams and Bill Shidler.

The storage facility in the Camden Elementary School gym will be enlarged so that teachers may store supplies there. The state fire marshal determined that it is a fire hazard to store the boxes as they do now: on top of the cabinets in the classroom. Cost will be $5,138.

Claims and payroll for $933,574.97 were approved.

The following were hired: Jessica Berger, chemistry and physics teacher, high school; Amy Tonsoni, English teacher, high school; and Danielle Dunbar, half-time teacher, Hillcrest Elementary.

In July and August, Minnick said the board will work on the budget and have special meetings to interview a superintendent and a high school principal.

Out-going board members Pat George and Tricia (Hammond) Britton were recognized for their years of service.

The next meeting will be July 10 at 7 p.m. at the administration building.
