Plans underway for
Comet staff report

Delphi Chamber of Commerce has begun planning for the 151st Old Settlers Celebration in downtown Delphi. The very first meeting, on Aug. 4, 1855, was held to organize and collect the personal recollections of those who had been residents of the county during the period of the first settlement and to preserve them in a form that might, in later years, become a part of the history of the county. A further object was to bring together annually the people of the county for social enjoyment.

This mission continues in 2006 with many of the same features of the first celebration, including community dinners, entertainment and appreciation of the county's rich history.

Delphi Chamber of Commerce organizes the street festival portion of Old Settlers. Carnival rides, food vendors, crafters and entertainers are contracted with the local chamber. This year, Anderson Amusements will provide carnival rides. Many crafters and local organizations have already expressed interest in setting up a booth in 2006. Anyone seeking information on booth rental space may contact the chamber office on Thursdays at 765-564-3034.

Afull schedule of entertainment is being planned for each night. Some popular returning acts will appear on the entertainment stage, located at the east entrance to the courthouse. In addition, some new acts have already been lined up as well. A complete entertainment schedule will be published in the local newspaper and mentioned in advertising closer to the date of Old Settlers. Anyone interested in performing at future Old Settlers Celebrations are encouraged to submit information to the chamber office, P.O. Box 178, Delphi, IN 46923.

The Delphi Chamber of Commerce is hoping to draw a lot of people from outside the county to this year's celebration. Newspaper, radio and television will be used to market the event. Any church, club, organization or business planning activities that they would like to have promoted as part of this year's Old Settlers Celebration is encouraged to notify the chamber office immediately. The best day to call is Thursdays. Or, the information can be mailed to the address printed above. Information can also be dropped off at the chamber office, 113 S. Washington Street, Suite 2 (rear entrance to building).
