Abbie Van Sickle of Rt. 1, Delphi, is the national winner in the 1996 International Aviation Art Contest, in the age 10-13 division. This is the first time Indiana has had a national winner. Her artwork will be judged in an international contest in Romania in June. She was given a certificate, framed copy of her artwork, and an original aviation print. Making the presentation last Thursday at DCMS was Dr. Suellen Reed, State Superintendent of Public Instruction who flew in by helicopter.

25 YEARS AGO

High winds with powerful rolling clouds and intense thunderstorms hit the area in northeastern Carroll County between 8 and 9 p.m. Monday.

Properties west of Ind. 29 and 218, north of Deer Creek in Washington Township, sustained much damage in the storm which resembled a tornado and brought with it rain and some hail. Wind reportedly blew from three directions, north, northwest and northeast.

50 YEARS AGO

Ned P. Rule, a popular Delphi high school student, has been appointed as editor-in-chief of the 1957 Oracle D.H.S. Yearbook. Ned, a member of the 1957 graduating class, is the son of Mrs. Enid C. Rule and has a top-ranking scholastic rating. Prominent in many school activities, he already has earned himself the reputation of a responsible and capable member of the school community.

Wayne Talbert, popular young Delphi businessman, has been elected president of the Delphi Lions Club. He will succeed Robert Clawson.

75 YEARS AGO

The American taxpayer is beginning to stagger beneath the burden of the cost of government. Blessed at present with the highest standard of living in the world, he is groaning at the weight of a tax load steadily approaching that of the peasantry and pinched city dwellers of Europe and beginning to wonder if theirs is to be his fate too.

All government in this country, federal, state, county, city and village, cost last year about 13 billions of dollars, four times what it cost before the world war, compared with a population increase of only 25 percent.

100 YEARS AGO

The Alpine Stock Company has been at the Flora opera house the past week and have put on a good play each night. Saturday night the play will be "Jesse James," or the "James Boys in Missouri" and a full house is expected. Turn out and see a good company.

A cow belonging to David Cunningham, of this city, gave birth to a calf Tuesday morning that is minus the rear appendix, or tail, as it is commonly called. Otherwise, the calf is all right. Mr. Cunningham is up against a proposition that up to yesterday morning had not been decided. The question at issue is: Should Mr. Cunningham pay full price for the calf?
