Burlington Council reviews quotes
Burlington clerk-treasurer Tammy Dyer presented quotes for a new office computer at last week's meeting of the Burlington Town Council. The first was for a Dell model at a cost of $1,077 and the second was for a Gateway for $1,233. She said both computers are identical. Following discussion, the council agreed to purchase the Dell computer, along with a back-up battery and flash drive. The old computer will be put up for bid.
Street and sewer superintendent Les Johnson presented quotes from Matthews Brothers, Harvey Miller and Troy Brewster concerning the red barn on the south side of park. Harvey Miller's quote was $1,200 to tear down the barn and remove everything. Brewster's quote was for pouring concrete for a 24'x30' pole barn for $1,800 and Matthew's quote was for a pole barn for $13,673. Stan Moore inquired if the job had been advertised and said he would like the opportunity to bid, too. Moore was encouraged to submit a bid by the May 22 special meeting. This building will be used to house the town truck. The current building will be demolished prior to the new building going up.
The cannon at the park entrance has been transported to Flora to be repainted. Swaim said, "this was approved during the July 2004 meeting." but nothing in the minutes states this. He said that he had spoken with park board president Louie Mann at the time and Mann had given his approval. Swaim requested that the money to paint the cannon be taken out of the park board budget. However, Dyer and Davis said there was nothing in the minutes regarding painting the cannon and the park board had not planned on it in their budget. The matter was tabled.
Dyer has been working on a grant application for a leaf vacuum. There will be a special meeting on May 22 at 10 a.m. for discussion. The town will begin writing a burn ordinance.
Town Marshal Jill Hammond reported writing 22 speeding citations and five warnings. She also
reported two property damage accidents and assisted the county with a drug overdose. She is currently updating standard operating procedures for the police department. Moore was given permission for road cut on Jackson Street where he is buying property north of his residence. Work on the sewage line at Steve's Garage is proceeding. Currently, quotes for the work are being mailed and awaiting signatures from contractors.
Ordinance 14-2006 establishing a levee excess fund was passed. This fund is in compliance with state statutes and use of funds will be determined next year by the state.
