Madison Grant wins Delphi Classic
The Delphi Classic baseball tourney was held this last weekend. Madison Grant, ranked sixth in 2A, won the event, defeating Clinton Central in the championship game 10-1.
Runner-up Central beat Seeger in game two 11-1 in five innings.
The Oracles tried to defend their title from last year but lost a close contest to Madison Grant in the first game 3-0. Scott Brothers held the Argyles to just 3 hits and had ten strikeouts, but the Oracle bats were silent. The Oracles had five hits and Josh Mullin had two of them.
In the consolation game the Delphi squad played sectional foe Seeger. The Patriots scored nine runs to the Oracles, eight. The pitching was good especially from Senior Kyle Schwarzkopf who gave up only two earned runs in four innings. Starter Andrew Cebulla also only gave up four runs, two of which were earned. The Oracles had too many miscues with their gloves committing tens errors in the game.
The Oracles are now 4-8 on the season and compete again tonight against county foe Carroll at Carroll.
Vs. Twin Lakes
The Delphi baseball team opened Hoosier Conference play at Twin Lakes. The Oracles slugged 13 hits and beat the Indians 8-5. Mike Myers and Brothers led the Oracles with three hits apiece.
Brothers ran his record to 2-3 on the mound, striking out 8 and giving up just 4 hits in going the distance. The Oracles committed 9 errors to keep the game close.
The team's first home conference game was against the Indians. The Oracles lost 9-7. Kyle Bender had a perfect game on the mound through six innings. The Oracles
were ahead 5-0 heading into the seventh when Bender gave up a single, a walk and then a double. Delphi was still in position to win when the wheels fell off. Three errors followed and the Indians scored nine runs to take the lead 95.
The Oracles came to bat in the seventh with a little attitude. Mullin had a single up the middle. Brock Zarse was hit by a pitch. Kory Banes drove the ball deep to center. Mike Myers had a single to load the bases. Scott Seabolt drove a ball that hit the center field fence scoring two runs, closing the gap to 9-7, with the tying run at second. Brothers hit a looping liner to left for the second out. The game
ended on a diving catch by the right fielder.
Vs. Carroll
The Oracles played county foe Carroll in the second game of the year Monday night. The Oracles brought their best offensive attack, getting 20 hits to outscore the Cougars 18-7 in six innings.
Bender picked up his second win on the mound, allowing only two earned runs. The offense was led by Banes, the Oracles' leading hitter, and Seabolt, each with four hits. Zarse had three hits and scored four runs. Brothers hit a home run and three RBIs.
The Oracles will play again this Thursday at home against TriCounty.
