A treat for Mother Groundhog
2006-05-03 / Front Page
This groundhog lives in the wild at Wildcat Wildlife Center near Delphi. She was orphaned as a baby a year ago when her mother was hit on the road. Someone brought her to the Wildlife Center. Volunteers took care of her and then released her to the wild, not knowing if they would ever see her again. As it turns out, she tunneled under an old storage shed on the Center's property, hibernated for the winter and then emerged around Groundhog Day. She still remembers those who cared for her because she responds to their voice. She now fends for herself, but volunteers have been giving her some treats since she is a nursing mother. The Center admits 2000 wild patients a year (orphaned or injured), and could use more
