Carroll math team wins championship

Photo provided For the eighth year in a row, Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School's math team has won the Hoosier Heartland Conference math contest.

Carroll won the championship title on April 26 with a score of 1,404. Second place winner was Tri-Central with a score of 1,122. Other placings were Lafayette Central Catholic, third; Clinton Prairie, fourth; Rossville, fifth; and Clinton Central, sixth.

Each school sent a team of four students in each of five test categories: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus, and Calculus. A total of 120 students participated.

Carroll's representation at the contest included students from grades 8-12.

There were two parts to the competition an individual test lasting 60 minutes and a 45 minute team test where all four team members worked together.

Three types of awards were presented:

Individual ribbons were given in each test category for performance on the individual test.

Each test category had a champion based on the individual test results and the team test results in that subject.

An overall conference champion was crowned based on the total results of all five test areas. As conference champion, Carroll took home a traveling trophy for display until the next year's contest.

Carroll coaches are math teachers Gary Duff, Susan Abbott, and Linda Harrold.

Four of Carroll's teams placed first - Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus - and the other team, Algebra I, placed second.

Algebra I - Michael Myer, third; Crystal Keck and Patrick Forgey, tie for sixth; Matt Shanks, eleventh.

Algebra II - Carson Spesard, first; Kaitlin Kennedy, second; Travis Martin, fifth; Malena Zook, sixth.

Geometry - Aurora Shanks, second; Angel Jackson, third; Krystal Brazel, fourth; Valerie Allbaugh, sixth.

Pre-Calculus - Shane Clingenpeel, first; Lindsay Stiller, second; Leanna Smith, third; Amanda Fields, eleventh.

Calculus - Kelsey Kennedy, first; Kelly Moffitt, second; Rachel Arthur, third; Allison Allbaugh, eleventh.

Rossville's teams placed as follows: Pre-Calculus, second; Algebra II, fourth; Geometry, fourth; Calculus, fifth; Algebra I, sixth.

Individual placings for Rossville are given below.

Geometry - Aaron Martin and Dave Snyder, tie for ninth.

Pre-Calculus - Aaron Brovont, fifth; Aaron Grady, seventh; Elizabeth Wise, tenth.
