Second graders celebrate Earth Day

2006-04-26 / Education

Two hundred and twenty-five second grade students enjoyed two days of Earth Day events and activities at the Flora Community Park last week.

They had beautiful, sunny days to plant flowers, learn about the water cycle, discuss recycling, and build their own "edible" landfills.

They were able to "dig in" at the soils session and see what they were able to pull up from the insect world, as well as listen to the story "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss.

They couldn't pass up the creepy crawler craf time table or the making of recycled plastic bird feeders.

As a highlight, they finished their event with the creation of designs for the back of Stephan's IGA paper grocery bags. This collection of student artwork promoted Earth Day and was handed out to customers with their groceries during the day on April 22.

The annual event was provided for Hillcrest, Camden, and Carroll second graders by the Carroll County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Northwest Indiana Solid Waste District.

Joseph Hall of Camden Elementary is shown in both photos. In one, he is decorating a grocery bag, and in the other he is holding a frog that was found during flower planting. The frog was released after children had a chance to get a close look at it.
