According to Delphi City Police Chief Ed Chapman's report submitted at the last city council meeting, 20 parking tickets were issued in February. No tickets were issued in the month before and only five were issued in February 2005. Chapman said the department acted on complaints from local business owners about people violating the two-hour parking limits in the downtown area in February.

He said enforcement was more relaxed when long-term parkers posed no problems for merchants. However, the situation escalated due to increased activity in Delphi's business district.

No warning tickets were issued because parking limits are clearly posted on signs and "that is warning enough," he stated.

According to Chapman a business is relocating into the building on the corner of Union and Main streets. More traffic is anticipated and the city wants to avoid parking issues for safety reasons at that location.

Chapman stated he expects an increase of issued tickets as the street sweeping ordinance is strictly enforced beginning this month. He said the ordinance was designed to allow street sweepers ample space to work.

Chapman noted there are many unlimited parking spaces throughout downtown to accommodate both business owners and shoppers.
