Vance L. Fincher
Vance Leroy Fincher, 77, formerly of Camden and Flora, died at 7:30 p.m. March 13, 2006, at Milner
Health Care in Rossville. He had resided there since Sept. 1, 2003.
Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Carroll County, Indiana, he was the son of Harry "Claude" and Ada Smith Fincher. He was married on Nov. 23, 1949, in Rockfield, Indiana, to Roberta "Bertie" May Allen, who died July 11, 1999.
Mr. Fincher was a teacher and coach at Carroll High School, retiring in 1990. He also taught and coached at Camden High School from 1951 to 1964 and taught at Twelve Mile High School from 1950 to 1951.
He was a volunteer for Flora Cablevision, hosting Coaches Corner and serving as a game commentator for Carroll High School sports.
He graduated from Rockfield High School in 1946, from Indiana University in 1950, and received his Master's degree from Purdue University in 1961. He also completed specialized courses at Butler University, Ball State University and the University of Wichita.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Camden.
A lifetime member of the National Education Association, he was also a member of the Retired Teachers Organization and Camden Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge #211. He was a former member of Camden Lions Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Teresa Ann Zinn (husband: Greg) of Flora and Cynthia Kay Fincher of Rossville; two sisters, Shelby Appleton (husband: Joe) of Logansport and Cheryl Moody (husband: Robert) of Cherokee, N.C.; two grandsons, Andy Zinn (wife: Susan) and Alan Zinn (wife: Jennifer), all of Flora; one greatgrandson, two great-granddaughters, and two step-great-grandsons.
Asister, Mary, and two brothers, Chet and Harry Fincher, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Baker Funeral Home, Flora, with Pastor Larry DeVos officiating. Burial will be at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Flora. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Baker Funeral Home, Flora (www.bakerfh.com).
