Another winner, not pictured, was Brandon Brooks. Comet photo by Jennifer Archibald Carroll Elementary received a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) grant for second and third graders to get free books. They each choose a take-home book at three different celebrations.
The first celebration was Feb. 10. The second celebration was March 10 with the theme, "One Great Read." Two weeks before the celebration day, all second and third graders received the same book to read. The books were purchased by the Carroll PTO.
The book was "Cam Jansen and the Snowy Day Mystery." Each day a quiz question was asked for a chapter at a time. Students were to submit their answers in the "Cat in the Hat" hat. A drawing was held at the end of each day to determine the winner for that day. Each winner received a snack treat, a certificate, and a coupon good for a free book.
The March 10 RIF celebration was held in conjunction with celebrating Read Across America. All students received a free book. Second and third graders received their books from the RIF grant. The remainder of the student body received a free book from funds allocated from the Title I program under the direction of Myra Compton.
Throughout the day, students participated in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). Every hour on the hour, the office announced "DEAR Time!" All students and staff "dropped everything" and read for 10 minutes.
