Each year Carroll’s FCCLA chapter celebrates National Family, Career & Community Leaders of America Week.

Local officers plan various daily events to promote the organization. This year members were asked to wear their FCCLA shirts, and members’ lockers were marked with a red emblem. The chapter also participated in various service projects.

Members prepared and served a breakfast to teachers, and gave treats to the janitorial, transportation, and cooking staffs.

Other areas of service were projects to help prevent bullying and to teach elementary students about making healthier choices for snacking. The presentation on healthier snacking was given to Linda Mylet’s third grade class at Carroll Elementary by Justin Brown and Jacob Craig.

The week’s schedule included a day at Bona Vista, a preschool for children with disabilities. Members put on a Valentine’s Day party for the children. They helped the children make cards for their parents, play games, and eat snacks. Several of the FCCLA members performed a puppet show on bullying.

Another day was dedicated to a national project, STOP the Violence. STOP Students Taking on Prevention is a peer-to-peer outreach initiative that empowers young people to recognize, report, and reduce the potential for youth violence. Carroll members took to this project and formed their own way of showing young children how to stop the violence. A puppeteers group was formed and worked together to put on a puppet show for elementary students. Three puppets were used to show the emotional effects caused by a bully.

To go along with the STOP the Violence project and the puppet presentation on bullying, the Adult Roles and Responsibilities class put posters in the high school cafeteria about the prevention of relationship abuse. This was in accordance with National Teen Dating Violence Awareness week from February 6-10. The motto for the week was “Dating and Violence should never be a couple.” The class also had a guest speaker from the Lafayette YWCA who talked about preventing abuse in relationships.

The FCCLA mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education.

The chapter met in Frankfort recently to hold the Spring District V meeting. New district officers were elected for the 2006-2007 year. Of the seven officers in the district, five of them are from Carroll. They are: Robin Guise, president; Adam Bonner, vice president; Kierstyn Harper, vice president of community service; and Emmajo Cottrell, vice president of recognition. Diana Alter is the Carroll FCCLA advisor.
