Collections Care Training coming to Flora Library

Flora Public Library is one of 100 sites in the state to receive a free visit from the Indiana Historical Society’s Hoosier Heritage Alliance. These Connecting to Collections visits are made possible through an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant awarded to IHS and HHA.

Owls to be topic of free program

Purdue Extension and Carroll County Master Gardeners will host a program on “Owls: Silent Hunters of the Night” at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at the 4- H Building in Flora.

Presenting the program will be Mary Cutler, naturalist with the Tippecanoe County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Air Force Airman Seth T. Parker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Canal/trail volunteer callout set for Feb. 16

A callout for new and present volunteers is set for Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Canal Interpretive Center, 1030 North Washington Street in Delphi.

The meeting starts with a free ham and bean supper at 6:30 p.m. Those who come early can look over some plans to develop more outside activities and exhibits to complement Canal Park and Delphi Historic Trails.

Check water levels in cut flowers daily.

Check stored produce and flower bulbs for rot, shriveling or excess moisture. Discard damaged material.

Most houseplants require less water in winter months because growth is slowed or stopped. Check soil for dryness before watering.

Unpredictable weather requires proper corn management

There may be no such thing as the "normal" growing conditions of old that many corn farmers have been longing for after enduring extreme weather in recent years, a Purdue Extension agronomist says.

Instead, Bob Nielsen suggested that corn growers should look at a variety of management techniques to give crops the best chance at success - regardless of the weather.

Here comes this column topic again: property taxes on farmland are increasing. The base rate for the assessment of an acre of farmland was $1,290 for taxes in 2011. It will be $1,500 per acre for taxes in 2012. And the state’s Department of Local Government Finance has announced the base rate will be $1,630 for taxes in 2013.
