Looking Back
It's official! The deed has been recorded transferring to the Town 30 acres of land adjoining Flora Community Park. The property will be farmed until the time when expansion of the park is agreed upon. Carroll County's Extension Homemakers and 4-H Junior Leaders have a joint project of providing boxes of new valentines for children at Riley Hospital, the Indiana School for the Blind, and Indiana School for the Deaf. The EH Clubs' 300 members and Junior Leaders' 100 members furnished a total of 5,000 valentines this year, along with extra envelopes and 300 stamps. The cards have been personally delivered, in time for the children to hand out or mail for Valentine's Day. Kelli Michner, CHS senior, was crowned homecoming queen at postponed festivities held during the Carroll and Twin Lakes basketball game on Saturday evening. Player of the week: Delphi's Joel Wagner who had 35 points for two weekend games, 16 of 21 from the field, 3 of 4 from the line, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. The $800,000 recreational center planned for the town of Flora remains in the drawing board phase nearly a year after its proposal. Flora Community Choir will begin rehearsal for the Easter Sunrise Service. The community choir, directed by Joe Spence, meets each year to prepare an Easter sunrise service cantata. Sponsored by the Flora Ministerial Association, the choir is open to all people in the area who enjoy singing and would like to be a part of this service of praise. 50 YEARS AGO The city of Delphi and its basketball team will be recognized by way of T-V next Tuesday. Mayor Roy Clauser has received an invitation to appear on the "Rhodes Show" on WFBM-TV Channel 6 at Indianapolis on Feb. 4, and to bring Coach Mannies and his varsity basketballers with him. The hour-long show begins at 12:30 p.m. and Mayor Clauser will have an opportunity to tell of the advantages of living in Delphi. There were just half as many arrests for public intoxication in Delphi in 1957 as in 1956. There were 62 that imbibed too freely in 1956, compared to 31 the past year. 75 YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Kistler have opened a grocery store and lunch room on Market street near the Wabash and Monon stations in Delphi and will open it to the public next Friday morning. They have stocked the new store with a fresh line of groceries and eats and will deliver them at your home or you can eat them there. In other words you can have your choice. Besides that a special fish fry will be given there Friday evening at a small charge. At all hours, every day and night, your wants will be taken care of. Mr. and Mrs. Kistler are courteous people and it's a pleasure to know them. Delphi welcomes the new store. 100 YEARS AGO At roll call of the various telephone companies at Rockfield last week Burrows reported 200 phones in use, Bringhurst 54, Burlington 162, Camden 190, Idaville 134, Rockfield 130 and Yeoman 200. Deer Creek has about 200 and Cutler about 100, making a total of nearly 1300 phones in the association.The committee appointed to try and adjust the trouble between the Flora and Bringhurst companies reported that their efforts were useless and they were discharged.
The following resolution was adopted: Resolved, that this association will not admit any other Co-operative Telephone Company to membership from the Flora field, provided the Bringhurst company establish a switchboard in said town prior thereto. |
